I bought a clicker a few weeks ago and it sat in the drawer until yesterday..when I had to chase MsMing all over hell and damnation to give her her hair ball treatment, So I decided to see if my my 3 could be trained.. and guess what they can! .In fact, we had a very nice grooming and nail clipping session today...They came to me, I didn't have to chase them..When Ms Toy made her way over to my dvds I clicked at her and she made a beeline to my side and settled down(after I gave her a treat)

Great! Now all you need to do is get Mike to follow suit

That´s funny because by off chance I received the clicker and book about cat training I ordered yesterday evening and started mine as well so now we can compare notes ;-)
All I´ve done so far is introduce them to the sound and called them - which is not a new trick - they both know their names and come about 50% of the times they´re told, but the clicker and the treats made it 100% yesterday and they seem to have a lot of fun. Can´t wait to see how well it works.
As always it has been Keira who picks up the idea first and when he saw that treats were at stake Leon quickly copied her.

How did you manage to get the nail clipping and the grooming into the routine so fast - in one day??!! That´s stunning.

At first I made sure they all saw the bag of treats..and heard the clicker at the same time..You want to associate both of them together..(Sound and treats) give them a few treats while clicking and stroking them also..at first make sure they are in the same room while you "click" when they come to you, wait for them to sit down then give treats and lots of praise, after a bit go into another room and start clicking..and repeat the process, cats are smart and they pick this up rather quickly..once i got them to respond to the clicker I just brought out my comb and brush, nail clippers, and started grooming, if they started walking away I just clicked and back they came and sat down.which got them a treat..The key is getting them to associate good things with the clicker..What's also good about it is that if they start to misbehave, you can distract them with the clicker..(like fighting or getting into mischief).. last nite at bed time I just went into their room and "clicked" when they came in, they got a treat and praise, then I said good night and it was bed time..

Be generous with the treats at first....then only give them when they come to you and sit down, that way you have their attention, which is want you want..

There´s surprisingly many books on clicker training with cats. I ordered mine on a whim cause I thought Leons "mood" a few days ago might also have been boredom. They are taking to it like ducks to the water or should I say cats to treats?

I think some tricks should be easy. Keira already greets me when i come home by rolling around on her back - should be easy peasy to get her to do so when asked. But I´m pacing myself. So far I´m sticking to coming when called and getting used to the click-treat conditioning.

Ever since I started the clicker sessions, Sabbath has glued her tubby butt to me..atm she is laying at my feet under pc desk, cleaning my toes..lol,Damn where is my camera!

I'd love to know more about 'clicker' training..its sounds fantastic! I saw 'clickers' for sale yesterday in our local £1 shop...I must get one...
